Is it a Flying Ant or a Termite? The Spring Identifying Guide for Homeowners

As the ground warms up here in North Jersey, we start seeing "the swarm." Every Spring, our phones at Inspect Pest Control start ringing with the same question: "I found wings on my windowsill—is my house being eaten?"

Before you panic, you need to know what you’re looking at. Carpenter Ants and Subterranean Termites often swarm at the same time. Here is the rational way to tell them apart:

**The 3-Point Inspection**

  1. The Waist: Ants have a pinched, "wasp-like" waist. Termites have a thick, straight body with no discernible waistline.
  2. The Antennae: Ants have "elbowed" or bent antennae. Termite antennae are straight and look like tiny strings of beads.
  3. The Wings: This is the easiest giveaway. Termites have four wings of equal length that are much longer than their bodies. Ant wings are unequal in length and look more proportionate to their size.

**Why It Matters Right Now**

While a flying ant is a nuisance, a termite swarmer is a literal "red flag" that a colony is mature and living under or inside your structure. In our neck of the woods—especially in towns like Cedar Grove, Montclair, and Verona—the older housing stock and local soil conditions make homes prime targets if the original soil treatments have worn off over the decades.

**The Inspect Pest Control Approach**

We don’t believe in high-pressure scare tactics. Our goal is to protect your investment with systems that work. If you see wings:

  • Don't vacuum them up yet: Keep a few samples in a Ziploc bag so we can accurately identify the species.
  • Check for "Mud Tubes": Look for pencil-sized tubes along your foundation or in the basement.
  • Get Professional Eyes: We’ll send Sal or Steve out to do a proper visual and structural inspection.

Stop Guessing. Start Protecting. If you’re seeing swarmers in Essex County, let’s identify the source before it becomes a structural issue.
